We’ve mentioned it before, but a reminder never hurts. Always review what you’ve written one last time. Are the dates correct? Did you transcribe the names correctly? Were the relationships stated clearly? Is something phrased in a way that is vague or that could be misinterpreted?

Once it’s online and the incorrect genie is out of the genealogical bottle, it can be difficult to put it back in.

And often it’s impossible.

  1. Read it out loud! After I write the same page 4 times I see what I expect to see, not what’s there.

    • Another good idea. While it’s not the exact same thing, I tell my math students who are stuck on a problem and can’t find their mistake to move on to another problem or two, come back to the problem they find the mistake in and start it over from scratch. It can be difficult to see your mistake when you’ve looked over it numerous times.
