acpl2Join Michael at the Allen County Public Library in Ft. Wayne, Indiana–one of the largest genealogical libraries in the nation.

Our trip dates are 24 July-27 July 2022  (three days of library research).

Dates of our trip are:

  • 24 July–arrive in Ft. Wayne. Optional group meal at 5:30 at a to-be-decided location–library is open from noon until 5 pm. for those interested.
  • 25 July. Morning presentation (topic to be determined) at 9 am. Library time from 9 am. until library closes at 9 pm.
  • 26 July. Morning presentation (topic to be determined) at 9 am. Library time from 9 am. until library closes at 9 pm.
  • 27 July. Morning presentation (topic to be determined) at 9 am. Library time from 9 am. until library closes at 9 pm. This is our last day

Trip includes:

  • assistance with pre-trip planning via a group email list–place to ask questions, get help before we leave, etc.
  • on-site consultations with Michael–multiple ones if necessary–I’m usually available for onsite consultations at least six/seven hours every day the library is open
  • morning presentations–topics decided based on participant interest

Participants are responsible for their own travel, lodging, meals, etc. This is not a “part of the herd” trip where everyone does everything together every day. We have a short presentation every morning when the library opens at 9 (and occasionally some people choose not to attend one or so of these if there’s a “burning research” issue they just can’t wait to get at). Participants can have multiple research consultations during the trip–our limitation is trying to make certain that everyone gets ample opportunity to ask questions. Our trip atmosphere is laid back.

Our group is kept small (no more than 25) to ensure everyone gets the assistance they want and need. We don’t have a full day of “scheduled group social activities” because I simply am not a big fan of them (other than optional group meals).  People with a variety of research skill levels join us on our trip–some because they want some guidance their first time at the library, some want some help with their research, and others want the structure of being part of a group. We are flexible.

Participants are encouraged to communicate their problems with me as much before the trip as possible. Pre-planning helps.

We will follow whatever Covid restrictions the library has in place at the time–if any.

Complete registration is $185. No refunds for cancellations after 15 May 2022–refunds subject to a $50 cancellation fee.

Michael: I emailed you a couple of months ago about speaking to the Peoria County Genealogical Society, but I have heard no response.

The question is do you do public speaking. We are so close to Galesburg; it would be nice to have a local expert come and share.

    And, what is your cost?

  4. Joan Schacht says:

I am researching my great-uncle who was one of only 147 Americans who died (9 Nov 1918) while they were a POW held by the Germans. He was born and raised in Moline, IL His WW I Draft Registration shows he was a Private in the IL National Guard for the previous 3 years. Do you have any tips for where I might located these records? I called the Guard office in Springfield and they said they do not have anything. Any ideas would be welcome.
    Thanks
    Joan

Don’t know if it’s ok to reach out here, but I have never seen the Colclasure name before except in my father’s family tree. Are you/your spouse descended from Chester or Harold Colclasure, sons of Riley (Mort) Morton Colclasure? Their mother, Ota Pigman Corry was my great grandfather’s sister. Please let me know if I can contact you.

Too late for me to schedule this trip to Ft Wayne… Do you have trips scheduled in the Fall of 2016 or any in 2017?—— I would also be interested in having you speak to our historical society

  7. Dina says:

I heard you speak at SCGS Jamboree. I would learn so much from you. I am discussing this opportunity with my husband. Thanks for making it available.

  8. Kathe Edwards says:

What hotel do you suggest we use for the Fort Wayne trip?

    • michaeljohnneill says:

There’s no recommended hotel for the Ft. Wayne trip. The Hilton is the closest and within a couple of blocks–so walking back and forth usually isn’t a problem. I usually stay in one of the less expensive motels on the western edge of town. There’s plenty of parking in the underground garage and a lot across the street from the library. If you have any other questions, please let me know.Michael

  9. Kathy says:

Is there room on the Aug 2018 Ft Wayne trip? Do you work with any local researchers there? I would like to maximize my time there and do need some research assistance.
    Thanks, Kathy

    • michaeljohnneill says:

We do still have room–plenty. We have had local people join us before–if I’m understanding your question. You can email me at mjnrotodig@gmail.com if you have any other questions. Thanks.

  10. Betty Gilbert says:

Two of us would like to attend one or more presentations
    Please advise the topics
What is the cost and who do we pay

  11. Mary Westerhold says:

Wondering if there are still 2 spots available

    • michaeljohnneill says:

I already answered Mary’s question via private email–but we have two spots available after Mary’s registration. Then we’re closing registrations even if it’s before the deadline.
