{"id":10162,"date":"2019-06-17T13:17:24","date_gmt":"2019-06-17T18:17:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/genealogytipoftheday.com\/?p=10162"},"modified":"2019-06-17T13:18:41","modified_gmt":"2019-06-17T18:18:41","slug":"lessons-from-a-german-map","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genealogytipoftheday.com\/index.php\/2019\/06\/17\/lessons-from-a-german-map\/","title":{"rendered":"Lessons from a German Map"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I&#8217;ve been looking at a few sample images from the new book,  <br><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2I5FawG\"><em>Family Tree Historical Atlas of Germany<\/em><\/a>  by James Beidler and I was reminded of a few things about maps&#8211;other than their general importance in genealogical research which goes without saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Space is limited on many printed maps and abbreviations not be standard&#8211;Helmershausen got abbreviated as Helmersh&#8217;n in this map. <\/li><li>Not every town is listed&#8211;a few <em>very small <\/em>hamlets near Helmershausen aren&#8217;t listed<\/li><li>Can you easily find locations &#8220;you already are aware of&#8221; on a map? It&#8217;s good to have a general idea of locations in your head to help avoid making mistakes.<\/li><li>Don&#8217;t guess where someplace is located&#8211;look it up if you can&#8217;t remember.<\/li><li>People always live near borders&#8211;at least mine do.
