Determining Your Ancestor\u2019s Personal Migration Trail<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Discovering your ancestors \u201cmigration trail\u201d is more than\ndetermining the physical route they took to get from one point from another. It\nis about determining others who might have had the same point of origin and\ndestination as your ancestor and what those individuals had in common with your\nancestor (biology, relationships by marriage, shared denominational membership,\nsame point of origin, etc.). Determining others who might have had the same point\nof origin as your ancestor may help you to locate more information on your ancestor.\nOur focus will be on ways to determine who else in the area of settlement might\nhave been from the same place as your ancestor\u2014and took the same \u201cpath\u201d your\nancestor did. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Chancery Court Records at the Library of Virginia<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This presentation will begin with a broad overview of the chancery\ncourt system in Virginia and how to determine what courts might have heard\ncases in which you ancestor might have been involved. The presentation will\ndiscuss search strategies for querying the chancery court records database on\nthe Library of Virginia website, how to organize and track those searches, and\nhow to organize and download images of actual records housed on the site. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Using Local Land Records at FamilySearch<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This presentation will discuss how to determine what local land\nrecords are available on FamilySearch\u2014including ones that are essentially digital\nversions of microfilm with no new indexes. The presentation will begin with a quick\noverview of local land records and how they typically area organized. We will\ndiscuss how to navigate land records on FamilySearch, how to use the original\nindexes that were created by the holders of the record (different indexing systems\nwill be discussed and demonstrated), and how to navigate the actual record\nimages. Image organization and downloading will also be discussed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
