The important thing is to think about your research as you do it. I\u2019m a fan of the problem-solving process attributed to George Polya, which I\u2019ve slightly modified.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are essentially four steps in the problem-solving process:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Understand<\/strong>&nbsp;the problem\u2013this involves learning the history of the area, learning the applicable laws of the time, all the records available (and their issues), knowing key terms in any documents already located, assumptions you have made, your ancestor\u2019s background, etc. Understanding takes time.<\/li><li><strong>Plan<\/strong>\u2013pick a record to access or an approach to use to answer your question<\/li><li><strong>Execute<\/strong>-search the record or apply the approach<\/li><li><strong>Evaluate-<\/strong>did you answer your question?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s a broad generalization. &nbsp;We discuss some of these items in slightly more detail in occasional tips and t<a href=\"http:\/\/rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">he&nbsp;<em>Rootdig<\/em>&nbsp;blog<\/a>&nbsp;mentions them in more detail\u2013sometimes a lot more detail.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are several ways one can approach \u201cproblem-solving\u201d and it\u2019s been mentioned as a tip of the day before. &nbsp;One way is not necessarily any more correct than another.
