Some records state things pretty clearly and explicitly\u2013we say those are \u201cdirect\u201d statements. Other times the researcher needs to take statements from several documents, combine them with other known facts to reach a conclusion not specifically stated in any one document. We say those statements are \u201cindirect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That reasoning needs to be included in your notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just in case anyone else wonders how you got a \u201cpiece of information\u201d that\u2019s not explicitly stated in any one record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or in case you forget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that would never happen, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>A reminder:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For several years, quite a few years ago, I wrote a how-to newsletter,&nbsp;<em>Casefile Clues<\/em>.
