In the same way a \u201cmother-in-law\u201d is currently generally interpreted as the mother of one\u2019s spouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In earlier uses, particularly the early 19th century and before, a \u201cfather-in-law\u201d could be indicating that the \u201cfather-in-law\u201d was actually a subsequent husband of the person\u2019s mother.&nbsp; Today that person is generally referred to as a step-father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly a \u201cmother-in-law\u201d reference could mean that the \u201cmother-in-law\u201d was a subsequent wife of the individual\u2019s father.
