{"id":30727,"date":"2025-11-23T07:58:34","date_gmt":"2025-11-23T13:58:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/genealogytipoftheday.com\/?p=30727"},"modified":"2025-11-23T07:58:54","modified_gmt":"2025-11-23T13:58:54","slug":"the-location-used","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genealogytipoftheday.com\/index.php\/2025\/11\/23\/the-location-used\/","title":{"rendered":"The Location Used?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From a while back<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Locations can cause all sorts of research difficulty, especially when an indexer or database creator uses a location that\u2019s not quite the \u201ccorrect\u201d one or at least not the one the locals know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several of my ancestors attended a Lutheran church a mile from where my grandparents lived in Hancock County, Illinois. It was near the town of Basco and locals referred to it as the \u201cBasco church\u201d to distinguish it from the Lutheran church in the county seat of Carthage a few miles away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When\u00a0<em>Ancestry.com\u00a0<\/em>included the records of this church in their \u201cU.S., Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, Records, 1875-1940,\u201d they used Carthage as the location, not Basco.
