{"id":4183,"date":"2016-01-13T17:34:03","date_gmt":"2016-01-13T23:34:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/genealogytipoftheday.com\/?p=4183"},"modified":"2016-01-13T17:34:03","modified_gmt":"2016-01-13T23:34:03","slug":"how-did-it-get-from-there-to-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genealogytipoftheday.com\/index.php\/2016\/01\/13\/how-did-it-get-from-there-to-you\/","title":{"rendered":"How Did It Get from There to You?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One problem-solving approach when analyzing a document or a record is to ask yourself, &#8220;how did this record and the information it contains get to me?&#8221; Sometimes the answer is not as simple as you think.<\/p>\n<p>That age for Grandma on the\u00a0US\u00a0census you&#8217;ve obtained on\u00a0<em>FamilySearch,\u00a0<\/em>probably went through a process very similar to this one:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Someone provided that age for Grandma to the census taker&#8211;it may or may not have been Grandma.<\/li>\n<li>The census taker thought about what he heard. It may not have been what was actually said.<\/li>\n<li>The census taker wrote it down in their notes. Their handwriting might have been sloppy.<\/li>\n<li>The census taker later wrote up their notes for the actual census. They may not have been able to read them.<\/li>\n<li>That census record sat around until it was microfilmed. Ink fades or is sometimes blurry.<\/li>\n<li>That microfilm was used to create a digital image.<\/li>\n<li>If you are using an index, then someone read that image and created the index entry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are a lot of steps in that process.
