{"id":8226,"date":"2018-04-12T14:03:22","date_gmt":"2018-04-12T19:03:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/genealogytipoftheday.com\/?p=8226"},"modified":"2018-04-12T14:03:22","modified_gmt":"2018-04-12T19:03:22","slug":"do-you-know-what-you-have","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genealogytipoftheday.com\/index.php\/2018\/04\/12\/do-you-know-what-you-have\/","title":{"rendered":"Do You Know What You Have?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Between Google searches, mindlessly surfing the internet, and websites that serve up results from numerous databases, it is easy to locate an image of a record and have no idea what that record is of.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s important that you find out and not assume.<\/p>\n<p>There are several reasons, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>citations can&#8217;t be made if you don&#8217;t know what the record is<\/li>\n<li>you may have a cropped portion of the original image<\/li>\n<li>the record may be just one page in a multi-page document<\/li>\n<li>there may be other records generated as a part of the process that created the record you did find an image of<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ask your genealogy colleagues, genealogy society members, genealogy Facebook group members, etc. what the record is of if you don&#8217;t know.
