Some AI Opinion
--------------------------------
I wrote this in response to a comment on the use of AI images in historical
and genealogical writing. I was addressing the fact that while there are
suggestions for how to use images responsibly, researchers should be able
to find something in the real world to illustrate their writings. In the
event there’s nothing that one can find to illustrate a point, there’s
always creating an image manually. I realize others have differing opinions
and that’s fine. So I made this comment:
“I have stopped using any AI images across the board--with one exception.
This may be an unpopular take, but AI images all look the same to me and
they look cheap. I make most of my illustrations myself--and yes, it shows.
Many times they are pictures of records, items (including heirlooms and
artifacts) I have around the house (maybe sometimes posing them in creative
ways), hand drawn images (yes I use crayon), etc. If I don't have a picture
of dead relative, I can usually find something to use as an illustration in
writing about him/her without resorting to AI to give me an image of what
it thinks he/she looked like.
“We are researchers and genealogists and that means we should be able to
find something in the real world to illustrate our ancestral writings. Just
because we can do something doesn't mean we should.”
What do you think?

Notebook AI for Genealogy Problem-Solving
-------------------------------------------------------------
Take your use of Notebook beyond the basics. In this session, we will look
at ten examples of using Notebook for genealogy research.
We emphasize the responsible use of AI in genealogy and being reasonably
critical of AI-created content. Our approach is to use Notebook to assist
in the refinement of ideas and research process not to have AI create
content and call it our own. Notebook can be the research assistant you
always wish you had—although an imperfect one.
