Partners in Crime
--------------------
[image: image.png]
Partners in crime may have had more than just a criminal connection. There
may have been a family connection as well. Criminal associates are still
associates that should be a part of your research process.
What the precise connection there is between the Gideon Rucker and Shem
Cooke referenced in the 1773 notice regarding counterfeiters I can’t say.
However both were “late” of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, suggesting they
were at least working together. Gideon Rucker and Shem Cook have a
possible familial relationship which won’t be stated here until I’m a
little more certain of precisely what it is, but they do have probable
connections to the same family.
The murder on the Mississippi in the 1770s we’ve mentioned here before. The
Absalom Hooper was married to a woman whose last name was Holmes and it’s
possible that there was some connection between Charles Holmes and the wife
of Absalom Hooper. Innis Hooper is another member of Absalom’s fami[image:
hooper-mississippi]ly. The connection between the Hoopers and Holmes and
the other two is not known at this point. Even if Richard Holloway and
Reason Young were not related by marriage or biology, it’s possible that
all the men had been associates of each other for some time, perhaps before
their time in West Florida.
Criminal associates of your ancestor are still associates and may provide
clues as to your ancestor’s origins.
Newspapers are a good way to learn the names of these associates,
particularly in the pre-1800 time period from which these records were
taken.

More about our webinar on UFO ancestors.
Description: Your ancestor was not dropped off by a UFO, but it may seem
like it. This session will discuss methods and approaches when a person
“just appears” in a location with little in the way of background or
identity. See reasons why people just show up and ways to try and determine
where they were from before. Geared towards advanced beginners or
intermediate researchers.

Notebook for Genealogy–A Four Session Pick Your Own Problem Course
With Michael John Neill
Our focus is on being practical, exhibiting sound genealogy methodology,
and demonstrating responsible use of Notebook (Google’s suite of AI tools)
in genealogy research. This course is for those who would like guidance and
suggestions in how to use Notebook and have a place to get feedback and
additional direction.
An overview of NoteookLM
NotebookLM (often simply Notebook) is Google’s suite of AI-driven tools to
analyze data from files and information you provide it. .
Notebook uses sources of your choosing, not what it found online. You
upload your own materials—including PDF files, text files, Google Docs,
slides, or web links—and the AI creates a private workspace built
exclusively around that data. You can upload any genealogy information to
it tht you wish , but it is recommended that only deceased people be
included and that you not upload DNA information on living people.
Capabilities
-
Answers with Citations: When you ask questions or search your uploaded
files, every response includes citations to your uploaded documents,
allowing you to double-check sources.
-
Synthesis & Content Creation: Notebook automatically generates concise
summaries, outlines main themes, and identifies connections or conflicts
across dozens of sources at once. You do need to validate its summaries and
conclusions.
-
Audio-visual Outputs: Beyond text answers, Notebook can create study
guides, briefing documents, timeline charts, slide decks, podcast
interviews, and videos based on your content. Even if you never share the
created materials, just viewing them and interacting with them may give you
some insight into your genealogical problem.
Course Prerequisites & Required Materials You should have digital records
for one ancestor or a father-mother-children family, including every extant
record available.
-
Format: PDF or JPG for images; PDF, Word, or raw text for transcriptions.
-
Preparation: Be familiar with the specific ancestral research problem
you plan to work on to get the most from Notebook LM and AI concepts.
Gather all materials between registration and the start of class.
Course Format & Zoom Sessions
-
Pre-Recorded Lectures: Students will view two hours of presentations
before group sessions begin.
-
Live Zoom Sessions: Held on Sunday nights (and recorded for later
viewing). Sessions combine live demonstrations by Michael working through a
set of family records alongside group discussions where students share
prompts, results, challenges, and questions.
Class Focus & Weekly Assignments
-
Weekly Assignments: One assignment per week focused on Notebook's media
outputs using your own research problem.
-
Scope: The course focuses on mastering the tools and capabilities of
Notebook rather than providing individual research advice, making it
accessible to participants working on problems from any region.
Community Discussion & Communication
-
Private Google Group: Used for asynchronous discussion, peer
interaction, Q&A, and prompt sharing outside of live sessions.
-
Email Requirement: A Gmail account is strongly recommended. Accounts
with AOL, Yahoo, or Hotmail frequently experience delivery issues with
group emails.
Sections of this class--two options--take the class on Sunday nights..

$50 to My Daughter
-------------------------------
When conducting genealogical research, it can be difficult to balance:
1. staying focused on specific goals
2. performing an exhaustive search (if that’s your prime directive)
3. searching everything you can get your hands on that has more than a
0% chance of answering you question or providing suggestive information
4. money
5. time
Concepts one and two usually go hand in hand. If you have specific goals,
it’s easier to think of what records would reasonably provide information
to help you reach that specific research goal. Item three is a rabbit hole
from which some researchers never leave. Four and five are usually
constraints all of us have and may cause researchers to cull some items
from their exhaustive search if the chance of relevant information seems
slight.
I was trying to find information on Anna Elizabeth (Trautvetter) Burke
Herzog (calculated birth of 4 May 1835-died on 22 January 1870 [all vital
data from tombstone in Daughtery Cemetery, Warsaw, Hancock County,
Illinois]). Anna’s second husband, Henry Herzog, survived her by thirty
years and married after Anna’s death and had several children with his
second wife.
Given the time frame, I didn’t think that Henry’s will would help me in my
research on Anna.
<https://rootdig.genealogytipoftheday.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/henry-herzog.jpg>
I was wrong.
Henry’s will it states in the last bequeast:
“And lastly, It is my will, and I hereby give and bequeath to my daughter,
Anna Lena Gimble, daughter of my first wife Lizzy, The sum of fifty
($50.00) dollars, to be paid to her at the time of final settlement of my
estate.”
There was no doubt that the Lizzy was a reference to Anna Elizabeth
(Trautvetter) as Anna Lena (Herzog) Gimble was born after the
Trautvetter-Herzog marriage and before Anna’s death.
I had wondered if he had also been married before he married Anna
Elizabeth. The reference to her as his first wife seems to eliminate that
theory. I’m now wondering though if there is any significance to “first
wife” other than to clarify who Anna Lena Gimbel’s mother is.
Whether Henry’s will meets the criteria of “exhaustive search” on Elizabeth
is a matter of debate. However, in my personal opinion, research on any
ancestor is not complete until all their spouses have been completely
researched. One never knows what might be found in the record of an
individual that references a former spouse.
Henry could have had other children with Lizzy. Just because the will does
not mention them does not mean that they do not exist.
The probate packet for the estate settlement of Henry should be referenced
to see if a list of heirs are included.
The reference to Anna Gimble does mean that she was married as of the date
Henry wrote his will: 4 December 1895, not the date his will was filed in
court.
