Make certain you note the publisher of each city directory you use, not just the year. In some time periods in some cities, multiple directories were published in one year by different publishers.

And different directories may provide slightly different information.

  1. This was true in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Sometimes I found the family across the river in the Louisville directory, living in Jeffersonville. It is just as important to save the title page of each year as well as the page(s) your ancestor’s names are on. As much as I love having digital images of these directories, I do miss the days of thumbing through and finding other great treasures in the book that don’t have to do with your ancestor: like ads of the business they worked at, or attended school, etc.
