Some city directories have a reverse directory in the back that lists residents based on their address. Don’t just quit when you find people in the alphabetical listing, make certain there’s not more in the back of the book.

Also helps see others of different last names living at the same address between census years. Living at the same address as my grandfather and his family was a brother-in-law – and his wife, who was my great aunt, grandpa’s sister. It was only for a couple years they lived together according to the directory.
