If you’ve been entrusted with a family item, what have you done to preserve it?
Have you digitized the item? Identified it? Thought of ways to share it and reproduce it?
The original may be special to you, but digital or paper copies may be special to others and a good way to maximize the chance that future generations can enjoy the item as well

I send copies of items, clearly identified including birthdate of persons, to historical societies that would have a connection to item or those who originally owned the item.
I photocopied and transcribed pages from a family Bible and gave the copies to several libraries, including the Allen County Public Library. I also lent copies of Civil War pension records and other historical records to the Allen County Public Library, which scanned them an put them online.
I’ve contacted the university near me, they have an archive department and they do accept genealogical materials. I have no one to pass my work onto so, I’m trying to find repositories that will take the bulk of my work. Another, resource is the local historical and genealogical societies, they are willing to take condensed versions, if I create a doc or CD with the info but not notebooks — it’s typically just a phone call to find out who and what they will accept of your work.
