The word “moiety” generally means half of something. The word is often used in real estate documents to indicate a half-interest in a piece of property.

  1. In Native American culture, a moiety is a sub-clan. My family was “adopted” into the Tlingit culture of Southeast Alaska, a matriarchal society. My dad is a member of the Raven clan. My mom is a member of the Killer Whale moiety, a part of the Eagle clan, and we siblings, along with my sister’s and my children are also members.

I had never heard the word “moiety” used as a legal term before now.
