Before you scan 400 family photographs, scan a few and make certain your scanner is working the way you think it should. Make certain you can back up the images. Make certain any editing is working the way you think it is. Then continue your project.

Before travelling to distant cemeteries to take photographs, make certain you know how to use your camera in a cemetery during different times of the day. Make certain you know how to upload your photos to back up services and media. Practice while you are at home and have time to learn and “get it right” instead of learning on the fly at a cemetery when the rain is about to start and you are about to leave.

The same goes with making digital images of actual courthouse or archival materials. Practice at home. You will be glad you did later.
