Remember that the only parent who has to be present at the birth of a child is the mother. The dad had to be around earlier, but could easily have been dead or moved on by the time the child was born.

  1. But if the record you are looking at is baptism, mother might not have been there at all. Many Christian churches needed to “purify” a mother for church services after birth and that happened after the child had already been baptised.
