One way to potentially get around your genealogical sticking points is to review what you “know” about your ancestor and determine if you can find a source or record to support that statement.

Also make certain that the source is reliable as well.

There’s more to genealogical analysis than having a source and determining it’s reliability, but those two key elements are a great start.
