If you know where a relative or ancestor rented a home, apartment, farm, etc. track that in your genealogy database. Leases are not usually recorded (in contrast to deeds) and where a renting relative lived can easily become lost to history.

  1. Yes, so important. I usually try to find where and who folks (African American, freedmen) are renting from when listed on the 1870 Census and see if any connections are in the Freedmen’s Bureau (labor contracts), etc. This might have clues to maybe a former slave holder, etc.
