More than names of places can change. Names of schools, churches, and other organizations can change as well. Do you document those? The name of the school district I went to changed while I was there–once named for it’s location within the county, once named for the main town, once with the word “community” thrown in.

Did your ancestor really switch churches or did the name of the congregation change?

  1. Not only names can change but numbers often change also. I have run into several instances of places of my past that have new numbering from the original. Unfortunately, the changes are often not recorded anywhere so you can be standing and looking at a site, with a doc and/or image in hand that states one thing and the current number on the home/building display a new number.

    • The street where I grew up has been renamed and the houses have been renumbered. I contacted the clerk’s office and someone was able to verify the new house number and street address, and it corresponds to the photographs I have.
