Have you checked to see if there are employment records for your ancestor? Virtually all of my ancestors were farmers, so there’s no “employment record.” However my children’s ancestor worked for the Pullman Car Company in Chicago and the image accompanying this post is part of his employment record.pullman

  1. First sight of this record. Interested to note that Thomas claimed to only have 4 children living at that time.

  2. Next, consider providing tips on how to locate employment records for companies no longer in business, and/or that may have been taken over/merged with other companies. How does one find out what it is called now, if it still exists? I would think many companies would consider employment records private, even when the worker is now deceased. Suggestions would be welcome in a future tip. Enjoy your posts!

  3. Would love finding my father’s work record. He moved to Detroit, Michigan 1940-1941 for job opportunities and was hired @ GM Diesel. Story has it that he was such a valued employee of the company that he was deferred from registering for the 40’s draft per request of the company. Were would I start?

    Thanks in advance

    • He probably had to register for the draft. He might have gotten some deferment based upon his employment. His Selective Service record may provide more details about that. You might want to start here at GM:

And see if they have some sort of corporate archives.

They may have some type of corporate archives….or may not.
