Think about all the locations where a record could be created or recorded. Death certificates are recorded where the individual died, but in more recent times a certified copy may be recorded in the jurisdiction overseeing the probate of the estate. Land records are usually recorded in the jurisdiction where the real property is located. Birth records are usually recorded in the jurisdiction where the person was born, although delayed records may be filed where the person was living at the time the delayed record was created.

  1. Are birth records recorded in the town where the hospital was located and a copies sent to the town where the residence is or is MA unique in this. I was born in Plymouth but lived in Duxbury – I get copies of my birth in Duxbury but have never tried Plymouth.:}

    Thank you,
    Barbara in MA

  2. So true regarding the last part about birth certificates … my aunt was born in NYC, but the family moved shortly after to Providence RI where she was registered. It took a trip to Providence to figure it all out, especially since there was also a name change! Was able to verify through comparing her father’s name and her birth date.
