Try and determine when your relative learned that story they are telling you. Would they have been a small child when they heard it? Memories that come from when the person was a child can be impacted by their immaturity and inexperience with life. Sometimes children draw interesting conclusions about family events only to pass them on as facts years later.

  1. I learned a lot of my family history on one side while I was still a youngster, but on my Mother;s side very little as my Granddad was absolutely not interested! That made me want to be something of an amature genealogist and that has caused me to become a whole lot more knowledgeable about both sides of my family! I’ve even had to disprove one of the “well authenticated” stories on my 4th GFF, and it upset many of the Family Uncles and Aunts., but facts are facts so they finally accepted the correct except for one Uncle, but their kids have have decided that you can’t argue with proven historical facts that can prove history so they all have taken my proven proof as fact! On my Mom’s side, I believe that my Granddad was denying everything because we had fought 2 World Wars with Germany and he refused to to believe they were Germans, but they definitely were and i have positive proof of that also…!
    their signatures and where they came from when they signed the Oath of ‘Allegiance to England’s King in 1733 when they got off the boat in Philadelphia in 1733.

  2. How true!:}

    My mother was an elementary school teacher and her name was O’Neil. One of her students translated the name into something he knew and called her Mrs.Oatmeal.

  3. When I was a child – My maternal grandmother lived with us, and My bedtime stories , my choice – was stories of when she was a little girl and stories of her life and our family in early 20th century – 1900-1930s.
    Because of my grandmother, She instilled in me a love of knowing I am , and how interesting her life was . My grandmother was born in 1895 and Her stories gave me my Love of Genealogy ! My interest in our Family Tree is likely 100% due to my grandmother’s stories- Some stories have since been corrected, but for the most part Her stories gave me a basis on which to grow- The basic roots of our family tree – I was a very blessed child who became a very blessed adult !
