There are some names that are used for towns in several different states. Is it possible that an informant on a record got the town right but the state wrong?

  1. I have been amazed at the city names that are in multiple states. It is also confusing when the a city name is not in the county by the same name. It’s always good to check it out be sure don’t assume. Kansas has a number of these. When I lived in Manhattan, a lot of times I had to lay them know it wasn’t in New York, but Kansas.

  2. Also, watch out for the same name in two or more counties in the same state! For example, there are three towns called Chelsea in New York State, one in Richmond County, one in New York County and one in Dutchess County. Believe it or not, there are two towns or cities in New York called Cheektowasa! One is in Genessee County and one is in Erie County. • Ann, just to be precise, the “Chelseas” in New York County and Richmond County are not actual towns, just neighborhoods. New York County is the legal name for Manhattan and Richmond County is the legal name for Staten Island. Both NY and Richmond County are part of New York City, along with Brooklyn (Kings County) the Bronx, and Queens.
