This 1882 release of a guardian provided evidence that Elizabeth Cawiezell was “of age” as of 30 March 1882. It does not mean that was her birthday, but it could help estimate a date of birth if other records are not extant. Guardianships may mention more than names of guardians and deceased parents. of-age-cawiezell

  1. How do you find out what “of age” meant in different times and places? Was the age fairly constant ? If not, how was it determined and by what authority?

  2. Usually it was the age of majority. Contemporary state statute would indicate what it was. Often it was 21 for a female and 18 for a male.
