think through a few things:

  • Can I get it somewhere for free?
  • Can I get it somewhere cheaper?
  • Do I really need it?
  • Do I already have it?

You might also want to see if a relative or fellow researcher is willing to help you split the cost.

  1. I went to Omaha, Nebraska to try to verify a family was related to mine. There were 3 possible probates for the family. I was told I couldn’t look at them because they were old. I would have to order copies of the complete files first. I asked to clarify. Left without seeing the files. Would have been paying for something that wasn’t likely to give me what I wanted and 2-3 would have not been the right person. There was no way to know how much the copies would have cost.
