If certain details of your ancestor’s wife change, but the first name remains unchanged, have you considered that he had two wives with the same first name?
Maybe Thomas married Mary One and after her death married Mary Two.

Great grandfather married Mary Heron and Mary McLurg. Both from Wigtownshire Scotland! First Mary died young from TB.
My grandfather married two women, one registered as Elizabeth Preston, the other as Betsy Preston. All the details are different and there are two marriage registrations. Still trying to figure out how the women are related, if at all.
