AncestryDNA allows users to have trees that are unlinked to their DNA results. That tree may be for someone who is not biologically related to the testee or the tree may be for grandparent, grandchild or someone else. Be careful devoting too much time looking for the genealogical connection when you do not know how the principle person in the tree is related to the DNA testee.

  1. I have one of those that has a three person unlinked tree, my 3rd great grandparents and someone who seemed like a random guy.

Turned out the user name was something this person used online and from that little bit of information I figured out who she was – a 3rd cousin, once removed. It helped her maiden name was the same as this 3rd great grandfather.

She wouldn’t answer an Ancestry message, and her Facebook was locked down. Finally was able to message her husband who passed the message onto his wife and she replied!

    • Usernames that are used for multiple accounts are one of my “goto” approaches. Just wish that it worked more often. I’ve not used the spouse approach…that’s a good idea.
