A relative was married for ten days when he died in 1918. His widow never remarried and lived until the 1950s. She’s enumerated in the 1920-1950 census with her married name–except for one time when she was listed with her maiden name.

I’m not exactly certain why.

It’s likely because in that enumeration she is living with relatives whose last name is her maiden name. It’s easy to see how the error could be made.

It’s also important to remember that sometimes a mistake is simply a mistake.
