Organizing Genealogical Information with Michael John Neill

We’re bringing this class back after a several-year hiatus.

Session 1-

Charts, Charts, and More Charts

We will look at a variety of charts and tables to help you organize the genealogical information you find. In addition to traditional genealogical data, we’ll look at organizing information from larger data sets such as probate files and pension records. We will also look at graphical representations in addition to traditional grid format.  Also discussed will be a general chart construction strategy to assist you in creating your own customized charts.

Session 2-

The 4-Step Research Process

We will discuss an overview of the research process using the 4-step process and see ways to help you organize your search goals and your search process.

Session 3-

Maps

We will discuss organizing information geographically and see a variety of examples of using maps to help give structure to genealogical information. We will see how to extract as much geographical information as possible from records.

Session 4-

Pre-1850 US Census

We will look at an organizational method to analyze pre-1850 census records and go through several examples of this with real families.

Class structure

Sessions are pre-recorded. We will have discussion sessions after the session has been viewed where we discuss questions and homework (optional) submitted by students in the class.

Lectures are downloaded and viewed at the student’s convenience. Homework is optional but can be submitted for instructor review and other class members to see. Class discussions are done via zoom and are recorded for those who cannot attend live.
