Books are a great place to look for pictures, clippings, and other ephemera. Things frequently get tucked away in books (Bibles, etc.) for safe keeping and some times get forgotten. if a relative says they have no pictures or clippings, ask if they’ve got any hidden away in a book. Just this week I discovered a picture I had stuck away and forgotten about.

So very true! Many years ago my mother-in-law gave me a Bible that belonged to her grandfather and included the family information. Tucked inside were pages of genealogical notes made by her uncle in 1898. He had copied information from the Bible of the original immigrant, my mother-in-law’s 4 great grandfather and also included his own family’s information. He also included the publishing information of these Bibles. There was information that I have not found anywhere else. It dated back to 1734.
In a book of German prayers of my mothers, I found a postal receipt issued in the year of 1912 made out to her brother, Ernest, who ran away from home in 1912 and is my brick wall. Too bad the receipt doesn’t say to whom the money order was for and maybe we would have had a direction in which to look for him.
My mother-in-law pasted clippings of births, obituaries, etc. in cook books.
I also found some lovely postcards of German castles in a book when I was dusting. They are now beautifully frames and enjoyed every day. She never traveled to Germany so we have no clue as to how she obtained them.
