We’ve said it before, but there are websites other than Ancestry.com and not every record is online.
Doesn’t matter how easy the ads imply that research is or how complete they say their databases are.
Don’t limit yourself to just Ancestry.com (or any other site–free or not). No one has everything.

If it were Ancestry-easy, we’d all be done by now.
are there sites I should avoid? I am seeing many ads these days
Ancestry.com has quite a bit of information and can be helpful–just take care when using information that is not an image of an original record. The compiled trees on any site (free or not) are only as reliable as the compilers or submitters. FamilySearch has quite a bit of original information and there are several sites that have digital images of newspapers–some free and some not. I would also suggest with the fee-based sites starting with a short-term commitment if you are uncertain.
