Dunkard Cemetery, near Toddville, Linn County, Iowa.

If you make cemetery visits for yourself that includes taking tombstone pictures, do you consider uploading those photographs to FindAGrave even if the person has a memorial? If FindAGrave is “not your thing” are there other sites where you can upload or share images of tombstones.

Once you publicly post a picture online, from a practical standpoint you do lose control over it. You can discreetly put your name/email address on the picture.

Consider including the following on the photograph:

  • location of cemetery;
  • location of stone within cemetery;
  • date picture was taken;
  • who took picture and contact details (if desired).

Some FindAGrave memorials have great pictures of stones. Others do not. Consider adding yours–if you are so inclined. No pressure to use FindAGrave, but please consider sharing copies of tombstone pictures with others.

  1. I added a photo of my grandmother’s tombstone. There was another one on Findagrave, however, mine was taken from a much better angle and more readable than the other. I received emails from people I did not know telling me to take it down as there was already one there. I ignored them, but Findagrave, or someone, did take my photo down, so I keep my tombstone photos to myself. BTW — the other photo was not taken by a descendant of my grandmother.

  2. That’s my joy! Taking and uploading pictures of gravestones for family members to find in the future!
    I go to obscure graveyards and burial places located near ghost towns.
    When I’m on a road trip I’ve stopped by cemeteries in small towns and taken the whole cemetery’s worth of pictures to upload later (because some gravestones are missed and there’s often times that some have been added).
    My gift to future searchers!

  3. In reference to Sharon,

    As a direct relative of your grandmother you are automatically entitled to manage that memorial on FindaGrave unless the creator of the memorial is a relative too. If they are not you can send a request to manage it to the creator. If they refuse you can send a request directly to FindaGrave and they will transfer it to you.

    With regards, Anita O. Kinard

  4. I have been told by Find-a-Grave that photos you upload are given a copyright by the poster. We should never take the photo without permission. That doesn’t mean most of us listen. The person who posts can deny use of the photo.
